Whatnot shipping for sellers
Shipping is where many live sellers lose the margin they thought they made on camera. Learn who typically pays, how labels fit the workflow, and how to protect net proceeds before you go live.
Who pays for shipping?
On Whatnot, shipping is often passed through to the buyer at checkout, but promotions, “free shipping” offers, and seller mistakes can leave you covering postage. Treat every free-shipping pitch as a cost that must sit in your price floor.
- Buyer-paid shipping: postage is collected with the order; you still buy the label and pack on time.
- Seller-absorbed shipping: you market free or discounted shipping—fund it from price, not hope.
- Refunds and reships: return postage and second labels can wipe a “winning” auction.
- International: duties, zones, and longer transit change both cost and buyer expectations.
Labels and carriers
Sellers commonly print labels through Whatnot’s shipping flow or their own carrier accounts (USPS and others appear often in seller discussions). Use whatever Whatnot supports in your region, then keep a packing station ready so SLA days do not slip.
- Weigh and measure lots before the live when you can—guessed dimensions cause underpayment or delays.
- Batch labels after the show; do not invent a second full-time job mid-auction.
- Track tracking numbers; unanswered “where is my order?” messages hurt ratings and repeat buyers.
- Carrier choice is operational—not a ranking signal. Reliability and cost for your average parcel matter more than brand loyalty.
Shipping cost vs seller margin
Commission and payment processing are only part of the story. Postage you absorb, bubble mailers, and time-to-ship all sit below the hammer price. Our free fee calculator estimates commission and processing net—it does not model shipping. Cross both before you set floors.

It depends whether postage was buyer-paid or seller-absorbed, and how refunds are handled. Read each order’s breakdown and your Seller Hub docs—do not assume every hammer price is keepable cash.
